Giouvetsi is an Greek recipe that is getting done in the oven. It’s a typical Greek food that you can do it either with Beef, lamb or chicken and pasta or ideally kritharaki.
Because is very difficult to find Kritharaki in the Netherlands, we will use mini pennes with beef, easy to find in any market near your house. Enjoy this fabulous food and try it also with chicken!
What we will need
Beef cut into small cubes 1 onion 1/2 cup red wine 2 Tbls oregano 2 Tbls salt 2 cups diced canned tomatoes or tomato juice 2 cups passata sauce 1 Tbls sugar 1 1/4 cup mini pasta 1 250gr mushrooms 6 Tbls olive oil & butter 1 Tbls garlic 1 Tbls all spice
How we do cook it
In the beginning, we cut the meat and the garlic in small pieces and we grind the onion.
We put olive oil in a pan and we add the meat, the garlic and the onion and shallow fry them a little bit until the beef becomes brown.
We pour 1 small glass of wine and we let it boil for 5 to 10 minutes.
When the beef is ready we pour water, we put the lid of the pot and we let it boil for 1,5 to 2 hours.
When the meat becomes really soft, we add the tomato sauce, salt pepper and all the herbs.
5 minutes before the meat is ready, we are putting the mushrooms in a pan, with butter, salt and pepper and we shallow fry them a little bit until they get some color.
We put the pasta in the bottom of a baking pan. We pour the sauce with the meat and the mushrooms and we mix it.
We add water but don’t fill it up until the top. Make sure that the pasta is floating into water. Add 2 glasses of water for every 1 glass of pasta.
We bake in slow fire for 30-45 minutes in the oven 180 degrees and every 10 minutes we stir to prevent sticking.
Enjoy!
